Halesworth Gallery Open Exhibition 2025
This year's open exhibition has opened.
I have entered 2 images (maximum allowed) and 3 images for the browser - all taken on trips to Venice. I am pleased to say one of the images was purchased at the opening night party - an ICM (intentional camera movement) image of gondolas moored for the night. It was printed on textured art paper which gave the impression of a charcoal drawing.
Another trip to Venice
...and it was just as inspiring as I remembered from last year
I joined a StreetSnappers' 'Leisurely Venice' workshop at the end of January 2025, and added a couple of days at the end to explore on my own. The focus of the workshop was 'street' and 'documentary' genres, and I disciplined myself to just using a 35mm lens, which allowed me to be much more agile.
The Cut Open 2024-25
I entered three images into our local (Halesworth) arts centre's Open Exhibition for the first time this year. I am pleased to say that one of the images, "Kate", was purchased. It does feel both humbling and rewarding when someone else feels that away about one's work.
A week in Ardnamurchan, Scotland
I have just spent a week (October 2024) in Ardnamurchan with Gill Moon Photography.
The timing was perfect as the autumn colours had arrived, and we were fortunate that the storm that hit on the Sunday passed over and left us with a week with very little rain. The coast is such a contrast to Suffolk; the Atlantic waves crashing up against hard rocks. It was very dramatic.
*** HOT OFF THE PRESS ***
...delivered from the printers today (5 August 2024), a zine I have produced containing many of the images I've taken documenting the local businesses in Halesworth over the past 2 years. And by way of an update the initial release sold quickly, so a total of 100 were printed as a 'limited edition'.

A pleasure to meet Maggi Hambling...
who visited Halesworth Gallery last night (13th July 2024) to support artist Chris Newson. If you've ever seen a newspaper article recommending Aldeburgh fish and chips there is likely to have been a picture of her Scallop Shell sculpture accompanying it. I provided the Gallery with many images of the event for use on their social media chanels.
A day spent with five fabulous dancers
I spent the day (15th April 2024) at Kimbolton Castle photographing five dancers in the various stately rooms. It turned out to be a bit more challenging than anticipated. The decorations meant the backgrounds could be quite cluttered and the high ceilings led to 'converging verticals'. Every day is a school day!
Photo Session for local Audio Mastering Studio
I took some images of local audio mastering engineer, Leon Smith, today (February 2024) in his studio, which are destined to be used on Subvert Central Mastering's updated website in due course.
What a place Venice is to photograph
...too hard to not get distracted as there is something to see around every corner
I spent 5 days in February 2024 in Venice - my first visit. The time was dedicated to photography so I didn't do anything touristy. But since I got drawn into the 'street' element I think that helped me to try try and understand the city more. None the less I did come away with plenty of photos of gondolas!
Just returned from a few days in the Lake District
... and made good use of the camera's thinkTANK emergency rain cover!
The autumn colours were spectacular. And indeed the weather did offer up atmospheric conditions, as well as encouraging some 'slow' photography just taking time to wait for the right conditions. Some images are located in the Landscapes gallery.

Many thanks to Melvin Nicholson (melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk) for the inspiration and driving. November 2023
Dance Photography
A day spent (20th August 2023) photographing top ballerina Kate Byrne.
I spent an informative day photographing top ballerina Kate Byrne, with studio lighting tuition provided by Jon Gray . Kate took time to share the history of ballet and explain the various postures and hand shaping. She review the images to ensure they had 'integrity' to truly reflect the ballet dancers' craft.
Halesworth Town social media
An article appeared in the local press (July 2023) about the social media campaign to promote the independent businesses in Halesworth, and the usage of my images. I am happy to help in their promotion as they provided a lifeline to many during the pandemic.
Please come visit and support them too!
